Day 2 - LA County moves into yellow tier
The Flower Fields in Carlsbad…
5/4/21. Tuesday
6:30 – 7:00 - My alarm goes off but I lie in bed because I need transition time. I’m at 100 pounds today. I’m not happy about it and I also started my period. great. Finally, downstairs to greet the animal, but she’s still asleep on the couch. This is way too early for her. I rub her tummy three times and we go outside so she can go potty. She does her business and we return inside; coffee for me, rotten chicken for her. I go upstairs.
7:00-8:30 – Shower. Wash hair. Lotion. Covid-19 uniform. Blow dry hair. Light make-up. I make sure all the items I need are in my lunch bag.
8:30-10:40 – B. arrives with flowers for Mother’s Day!! They’re beautiful!! I put them in water and we leave for the Flower Fields in Carlsbad.
-Driving.
10:40-1:00 – Arrive and it is acre upon acre of colorful ranunculus [look up this flower so you can see how beautiful it is!]. This place reminds me of a carnival – there are food kiosks for pizza and ice cream, and kids can stick their faces through giant corn-on-the cobs and sun flowers drawn on particle boards. And there are big tractors dragging open-air wagons behind them for people who want to take a tour of the fields. And then, of course, there are the flowers…as far as the eye can see in all colors. There is plenty of room for photo-ops. When taken correctly, selfies show people standing in a sea of flowers. In the middle of it all, B. and I watch a 15-minute video in a barn about the Ecke family and how the Flower Fields came into existence.
This is an open air event and everyone is still masking, but towards the end of our visit, it’s packed and I start feeling uncomfortable. The Flower Fields are directly against Armstrong Nursery so B. and I spend a few minutes looking at the flowers for sale before we leave – ONE 5-gallon rose bush costs $45!!
1:00-3:00 – B. and I decide to eat lunch in Carlsbad so we go to a few restaurants but they’re all closed - it’s very strange. We finally end up at Park 101 and I have the best shrimp tacos I’ve ever had – they’re that good. I order a Pinot Grigio and it comes in a can. I’m skeptical, but as soon as I take my first sip I find that it’s really good - crisp and light at the same time. A great lunch!
3:00-5:30 – B. and I head home.
Driving.
5:30 – 7:00 – Cocktail hour.
7:00-9:00 – B. and I watch Collective, the Romania documentary where three investigative journalists discover a vast conspiracy existing among the distributors who provide disinfectants to hospitals. To cut costs, the distributors are watering down the disinfectants! causing a deadly bacteria to break out and kill 35 burn victims who ended up at the hospital after a fire broke out at the bar called Collective. This documentary is so disturbing and there is so much more to this conspiracy…it was nominated for an Academy award for Best International Feature Film.
9:30 – B. leaves. He takes the extension cords I’m trying to get rid of.
10:00 – 11:00 - It’s been a long day. I take the dog out, lock up, and set the alarm.
Nighttime routine. Bed.
