More of The Getty Villa…

7/21/21. Wednesday

7:30 – 8:00 – My alarm goes off and I lie in bed until 8:00. I weigh 100.5 today.  Too many carbs [peas and chips], too late at night, yesterday.

8:00-8:30 – I go downstairs to greet the animal, but she’s still asleep on the couch.  The dog rolls over on her back and I rub her tummy, trying to wake her up.  I note that she pooped in front of the door – did she do that last night? Or this morning? OMG!  The dog grabs her toy and we go outside.  I water my potted jasmine plants while she goes potty, then we go back inside and I clean up the poop by the front door. Cheese for her; coffee for me.  I go upstairs.

8:30-9:30 – Shower. Lotion. I put on a short, blue, sun dress (L. didn’t want the dress anymore and gave it to me). Light make-up.  I have just enough time to ‘publish’ today’s class content.

9:30-1:00 – B. arrives and we head to The Getty Villa, in Malibu. The Getty Villa finally opened this month and there’s a new Mesopotamia exhibit on loan from the Louvre that sounds interesting.

I like to refer to the Getty Villa as an “open-air museum” because it was designed to replicate the typical Roman villa, circa AD 79.  By that I mean, many of the exhibits are exposed to the elements – under over-hangs or behind huge columns -  because the Roman villas in that time had open-air floor plans. The Getty Villa is modeled after the Roman Villa dei Papiri, a huge residence on the Bay of Naples that was buried by the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79, BUT Getty’s architects also incorporated details from other ancient houses in nearby Pompeii and Herculaneum to complete the vision.

The museum is meant to symbolize a Roman home, complete with an Atrium – the main public room in a Roman home; outer and inner Peristyles (gardens); and an herb garden, although that was under construction/renovation when B. and I were there. Inside the Getty are numerous Roman and Greek exhibits. Suffice it to say, the Getty Villa is very beautiful and perched at the top of a mountain, with views of the Pacific Ocean.

After an hour of exploring, I have some walnuts and cheese cubes for a snack.

It’s crowded today, but everyone is masking.  Even though we’re in Malibu, this is still LA County and people are upholding the mask mandate. B. and I are able to see almost everything – we don’t make it to the third floor because we run out of time. We leave for our 2:00 reservations at Geoffreys.

2:00-3:30 – Arrive at Geoffreys and I love this place!  It’s the epitome of al fresco dining – their tables have always been outdoors, even before the pandemic – and it hasn’t changed since our last visit (B.’s birthday last October – almost a year ago). I order a glass of Brut champagne and split a Cesar salad with B. For my entrée, I order the Coconut Shrimp appetizer. B. gets the Seafood Paella – I have a few bites and it’s incredible! – and some sort of rum drink. My coconut shrimp is good, too, and I have one left so I take it home.

4:00-5:30 – We leave and hit rush hour traffic – we’re in gridlock most of the way home.

5:30-7:30 – Home and cocktail hour! B. and I have drinks and watch the Bosch series on Amazon.  I’m a huge fan and have watched every season religiously.  Currently, this is the 7th season and [choking back tears] the last season.

B. is hungry again and orders a medium pizza (sausage and pineapple) for himself, from Dominoes. I’m still full from lunch so I don’t have any slices.  He eats the entire pizza in 30 minutes.

7:30-9:00 – B. and I continue watching Bosch. B. leaves around 9:00.

9:00-12:00 – I am absolutely hooked on this series and watch the next two episodes, but accidentally fall asleep. Darn it.

12:00-12:30 – Kitchen duty. I listen to True Crime Garage.

12:30-1:30 – Nighttime routine.

1:30 – 2:00 – I read a little of Formation and then bed.
